Work and change

Retired early. Now what is the week for?

Some men chose it. Some were offered it, with a package and a kind word. Many in technology and travel are calling it early retirement. Whatever got you here, the diary is yours now, and that is a bigger change than it sounds.

This guide is for the man who has stepped off the ladder earlier than he planned and is working out what the next part of his life is for. It is free to read, and the chat is here when you want to think out loud.

The word

"Early retirement" covers a lot. For some it is a plan that finally came good. For others it is the cleanest way to describe an exit nobody quite chose. Both are real, and both deserve a straight look rather than a brave face.

The honest question is not whether you call it retirement. It is whether you are resting, stopping, or between things. Each needs a different week.

What goes with the job

The title, the team, the calendar that filled itself, the people who rang because you could help. Most men expect to miss the money. Fewer expect to miss being expected somewhere on a Tuesday.

None of that means you made the wrong decision. It means structure was doing more work than anyone noticed.

The first year

The first months can feel like a long weekend, then a strange one. Sleep shifts, drinking can creep, and the days get shapeless. A little structure, chosen by you, tends to help more than a grand plan.

Why James

James Roberts spent nearly twenty years headhunting in travel and hospitality, latterly running a firm of twenty. He left that industry at forty-five, got sober, moved to Tenerife and ran a small BnB for five years. He has noticed a lot of people from travel technology describing their exit as early retirement, and he knows how much a word can hide.

The chat is an SI (super intelligence) guide, not James replying live. It speaks in his voice, and it will not hurry you.
