The first year

The first year

The first year after leaving early is rarely the holiday people picture. It is a change of structure.

The long weekend, then the strange one

The first weeks often feel like relief. Then the structure that was holding the week together goes quiet, and the days blur. That is not a sign you got it wrong. It is a sign the job was doing more than paying you.

Small structure beats a grand plan

A fixed time to get up. One thing a day that leaves the house. One person a week you see on purpose. A walk. None of it is impressive, and that is why it lasts.

I lived through a version of this when I left an industry I had been in for nearly twenty years. What helped was not a plan for the rest of my life. It was a reason to be up and out by a certain time.

Watch the quiet slides

Drinking a bit earlier. Sleeping badly. Not seeing anyone for days. Snapping at the people at home. Each of these is common, and each is worth taking seriously early. If they are building, talk to your doctor.

Then the bigger question

Once the weeks have a shape, the real question arrives: what is this part of life for? Some men go back to work in a different way. Some give their time. Some finally learn to rest. There is no right answer, only an honest one.

The SI guide can help you think about your own version of this. It is not James, and not a professional of any kind.
